Preparation Before Christmas:
As we light the candles of the Advent wreath each week, our anticipation grows as we draw closer to celebrating Christ’s arrival. The Advent wreath, with its five candles, helps us focus on the light of Jesus coming into the darkness of the world.
The Prophecy Candle (Hope)
The first Advent candle, often called the Prophecy Candle, reminds us of the hope God’s people held as they awaited the promised Messiah. The prophets—especially Isaiah—foretold the coming Savior who would bring light into a world darkened by sin. This candle proclaims that our hope is not wishful thinking but is anchored in God’s sure and certain promises fulfilled in Christ.
The Bethlehem Candle (Peace)
The second candle, the Bethlehem Candle, points us to the humble town where God chose to enter our world in the flesh. It recalls Mary and Joseph’s journey and the peace announced by the angels on the night of Christ’s birth. This candle reminds us that true peace is found only in the Savior who comes to reconcile sinners to God.
The Shepherds’ Candle (Joy)
The third candle, often rose-colored, is the Shepherds’ Candle, symbolizing the joy that breaks into the world with the Good News of Jesus’ birth. The shepherds, lowly and overlooked, were the first to hear heaven’s song of great joy for all people. This candle reflects the joy that Christ brings as He shines His mercy into our lives.
The Angels’ Candle (Love)
The fourth candle, the Angels’ Candle, highlights the divine love revealed in the Incarnation. The angels proclaimed God’s steadfast love made flesh in the Christ Child. This candle calls us to contemplate the full measure of God’s love—sending His Son into our world to save sinners through His life, death, and resurrection.
The Christ Candle (Christmas)
The Christ Candle, placed at the center, is lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Its bright white light announces that the promised Savior has come. Jesus Christ is the Light of the world who scatters darkness and brings salvation. This candle proclaims the fulfillment of God’s promises and the gift of eternal life in His Son, our Lord.
